Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Each Tuesday participants share a few teaser sentences from their current read(s).
This week I have two teasers for you! Ha, these two books are so totally opposite, but they’re both fantastic.
The Corpse-Rat King by Lee Battersby is an absolutely incredible fantasy novel (&, really, does Angry Robot publish anything that isn’t awesome??). Marius don Hellespont and his apprentice are looting a battlefield one day when they come across the dead body of the King. A dead soldier mistakes Marius for said King and Marius finds himself in the dead’s world. After it’s discovered that, no he is not their ruler and he’s actually very much alive, the dead return him to the living with a task: find them a new king.
He held his hand up. As he watched, the skin dried out, grew pale, then grey. His nails darkened. Cracks appeared in their surface. Small flakes dropped from his skin, and the fingers withered until they were little more than desiccated claws. He stifled a cry of alarm, and scrambled in his lap for the discarded glove, pulling it back on with a shaking hand. He curled into a foetal ball, and slowly reached up to pull the hood down over his face.

My second teaser comes from Pies and Prejudice, the first book in the Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series. After catching her husband cheating, Ella Mae leaves New York and heads home to Havenwood, Georgia. A love of baking pies turns into a business, and Ella Mae discovers her pies are not only tasty, they have certain magical effects on the tasters. Add in a childhood rivalry, an old high school crush, and a murder, and things in Havenwood aren’t exactly as smooth-sailing as Ella Mae had hoped.
Ella Mae thanked Peggy, corralled Chewy back into his carrier, and left. Instead of heading home, she drove into town and parked in front of Little Kentucky’s upscale clothing boutiques. She cracked the passenger window and poked her fingers into the carrier. “I’ll only be a second. See that black dress in the window? If they have it in my size, I’m going to buy it. Mama’s got a funeral to crash.”
